Marktplatz Nord, Byrne Kreuz / Market Square North, Byrne Cross

Im nördlichen Teil des Marktplatzes steht ein keltisches Kreuz, das zum Gedenken an William Augustine Byrne (1864 - 1910) aufgestellt wurde. Byrne absolvierte die Königliche Akademie für Veterinär Chirurgie (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) in London und leitete eine Praxis in Castlestrange, Athleague. Er ist am St. Comán Friedhof begraben. Als seine Freunde ein Denkmal am Grab von Byrne errichten wollten, wurde es ihnen verwehrt, da der Friedhof in der Zwischenzeit aufgelassen worden war. Als Ersatz wurde ihnen der Marktplatz in Roscommon angeboten.

In the northern part of the Market Square there is a Celtic cross that was erected in memory of William Augustine Byrne (1864 - 1910). Byrne graduate at the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in London and headed a surgery in Castlestrange, Athleague. He was buried on the St. Comán's cemetery. Later his friends wanted to raise a monument at the grave of Byrne, but that was denied as the cemetery had been closed in the meantime. As a substitute the Market Square of Roscommon was offered to them.
