Roscommon
Anglikanische Kirche zum Hl. Coman / St. Coman's Church of Ireland Kirche
In the middle of the 6th century St. Comán founded a monastery which was the origin of today's town that still bears his name (Ros Comáin - wood of Comán). As was usual with Irish monasteries it was for several times raided by Gaelic clans in the following centuries. In the 1140ies the monks adopted the Rules of St. Augustine. Yet the raids continued until the O'Conors gained sovereignty of Roscommon in the middle of the 14th century. Around 1540 the English dissolved all Catholic monasteries, the church building fell into decay. In 1775 the Anglican community built a new church, reusing parts of the old building. In the 1880ies the church was rebuilt and got its contemporary appearance.
On the south side of the church the remains of a stone slab is mounted into which a cross is engraved. It was found on the cemetery. As was a gravestone from the 9th century that is on display in the museum. Beside it is a stone that looks like a bullaun stone. But it is not listed in the database of the National Monument Services.
