Felim O'Conor Grabplatte / Felim O'Conor Effigy
Although Felim O'Conor (Feidlim Ua Conchobair) was the titular King of Connacht from 1233 to 1265, the real power was held by the Anglo-Normans, especially the family de Burgh, and his dominion was limited to the County Roscommon. Felim tried to shake off the yoke for several times, but was put in his place every time by the occupying forces. Also his attempts to strengthen his position by maintaining good relations to the English king Henry III. failed. During all of his regency Felim was in a permanent conflict with Maurice FitzGerald, Justiciar of Ireland. In 1236 and 1249 Felim even had to flee for some time, while Maurice installed another king. Felim died in 1265 and was entombed in the abbey of Roscommon that he had founded in 1253.
The info panel in the abbey describes his effigy on the grave slab. On it Felim is portrayed as king of high rank which was probably an attempt to legitimate the family's claim to the title King of Connacht at a time when the O'Conors were subjected more and more to pressure on the part of the Anglo-Norman rulers.
