Tulsk Fort

(2025-07-15)

Tulsk (Tuilsce, from Tulach Uisce - hill of the water) was already populated in the Neolithic Age (4000 B. C.), as could be proven by excavations at the central ringfort (number 1 on the Rathcroghan Route). In the 1400s the Clan O'Conor Rue built a tower house in the ringfort that was used as their residence and seat of government and today is called Tulsk Fort. During the following centuries the fort was repeatedly attacked, damaged and reconstructed, until it fell into the hands of the English in the 16th century. In 1641 the fort was abandoned on order of Charles I. Afterwards Tulsk had no longer any political meaning. Due to the Great Famine and rural flight the population decreased by about two-thirds in the second half of the 19th century.
