Athlone (Ath Lúain - Die Furt des Lúain) liegt
nicht nur an der N6 (der direkten Verbindung zwischen Dublin und Galway),
sondern auch etwa in der Mitte des beschiffbaren Shannons. Sie gilt als
Hauptstadt der Mitte und als Tor zum Westen.
Im Bereich der Furt gab es am Shannon viele unschiffbare Stromschnellen -
die Wikinger mussten bei ihren Plünderungstouren ihre Boote durch Athlone
tragen. 1757 wurde als erster Versuch die Situation zu verbessern im
Westteil der Stadt ein Kanal gebaut. In den 1840ern wurde dann dieses Wehr
und Schleusen gebaut, damit war der Shannon durch Athlone endlich
befahrbar.
Athlone (Ath Lúain - the ford of Lúain) is not only on the
N6 (the direct connection from Dublin to Galway), but it is also in the
middle of the navigable part of the Shannon. It is deemed as the capital
of the midlands and the gateway to the west.
In the range of the ford there were many unnavigable rapids in the Shannon
- the Vikings on their raids had to carry their boats through Athlone. In
1757 as a first attempt to better the situation a channel was built in the
west part of the town. In the 1840ies this weir and locks were built,
making the Shannon through Athlone finally navigable.
