Athlone - Castle

1210 errichtete John de Grey im Auftrag von King John von England eine Festung, um die neue Brücke über den Shannon zu beschützen. 1691 wurde sie nach heftigem Kampf von den Truppen König Williams eingenommen - und damit fiel auch die Stadt. In den folgenden Jahrhunderten wurde die Festung als Quartier für das Militär verwendet.
Heute befinden sich Ausstellungen, ein Museum, die Touristen Information und ein Kaffeehaus im Inneren der alten Steinmauern.

In 1210 John de Gray built by order of King John of England a castle to protect the new bridge across the Shannon. In 1691 it was conquered after violent battles by the troops of King William - and with it the whole town. In the centuries to come the castle was used as barracks for the military.
Today there are exhibitions, a museum, the tourist information and a coffee shop inside the ancient stonewalls.
