Clonmacnoise -
Normannen Burg / Norman Castle

Im Jahre 1169 landete Richard de Clare (genannt "Strongbow") mit seinem Normannen Heer erstmals in Irland und eroberte das Land im Auftrag von König Henry II. of England. 80 Jahre später war Irland zu drei-viertel unter Normannischer Herrschaft.
In Clonmacnoise, direkt neben dem Kloster, errichteten die Normannen eine von vielen Burgen. Viel ist bis heute aber nicht davon übriggeblieben.
Am nebenan gelegenen Bootssteg vertäuen heute Freizeitkapitäne ihre Kabinenkreuzer, um direkt zur Klosterruine zu gehen.

In the year 1169 Richard de Clare (called "Strongbow") and his army or Normans landed in Ireland for the first time and conquered the country by order of King Henry II. of England. 80 years later three-fourth of Ireland was under the ruler ship of the Normans.
In Clonmacnoise, directly beside the cloister, the Normans erected one of many castles. But not much has remained from it to this day.
Nowadays skippers moor their cabin cruisers on the wharf beside the castle, to go directly to the cloister ruins.
