Monasterboice

Das Kloster von Monasterboice wurde um 500 gegründet und war eine der bedeutendsten Stätten der Gelehrsamkeit in Irland. Der Rundturm brannte 1097 aus, die sich darin befindliche Klosterbibliothek wurde ein Opfer der Flammen. Drei Hochkreuze stehen in der Nähe des Turmes: Das Nordkreuz ist teilweise beschädigt, das "Hohe Kreuz" ist mit etwas 7 Metern das höchste Irlands. Mehr...

The cloister of Monasterboice was founded around 500 A.D. and was one of the most important sites of scholarship in Ireland. The round tower burnt out in 1097, the cloister library in it became a victim of the flames.
