Dublin City: Famine Memorial

An der Nordostecke von St. Stephen's Green wurde ein Mahnmal an die Hungerkatastrophe in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts errichtet. Ausgelöst von Missernten von Erdäpfeln (der Hauptnahrungsquelle der armen Massen) starben hunderttausende Iren an Hunger, weitere Millionen verließen das Land um in der Fremde (meist Amerika oder Australien) eine neue Heimat zu suchen.

On the northeast corner of St. Stephen's Green a memorial was erected reminding of the catastrophe of the Great Famine in the middle of the 19^th century. Triggered by bad harvests of potatoes (the main source of nourishments of the poor masses) hundreds of thousands of Irish people died of hunger, millions more had to seek new homes abroad (mainly in America or Australia).
