Baltinglass

Am Ufer der Slaney gründete Dermont MacMurrough, König von Leinster, im Jahre 1148 eine Zisterzienser Abtei. Doch Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts wurden die Mönche - wie bei vielen andere Klöstern auch - durch die repressive Politik König Henry VIII gezwungen die Abtei aufzugeben.

At the banks of the Slaney, Dermont MacMurrough, king of Leinster, founded a Cistercian abbey in the year 1148. But in the middle of the 16^th century, the monks had to leave the abbey, just like it happened in many other monasteries, forced by the repressive politics of king Henry VIII.
