The south

Tipperary - Kilkenny - Carlow - Wexford - Waterford

In den Grafschaften im Süden weichen wir von unserer sonst üblichen Route entlang der Küste ab und fahren viel durch das Landesinnere. Die Berge sind hier nicht so hoch wie im Westen, dazwischen weite Ebenen und breite Flußtäler. Der Ausblick von fast allen Berggipfeln ist daher wie in dem englischen Sprichwort: An einem klaren Tag kann man in die Ewigkeit sehen.
Hier sind auch mehr große Städte entstanden als in den anderen Teilen Irlands. Wir nehmen uns aber lieber Zeit für die vielen Gärten, Parkanlagen und alten Bauwerken dazwischen, von denen es scheinbar ebenfalls mehr gibt.

In the counties of the south we leave our usual route along the coast and drive long distance over the land. The mountains are not as high as in the west, and between them lie wide plains and broad river valleys. The view from almost all mountain peaks is therefore like in the English proverb: On a clear day, you can see forever.
Here, more large cities have been founded than in other parts of Ireland. We would rather take the time to visit the many gardens, parks and old buildings, of which also more seem to exist.

Unsere erste Station ist der Rock of Cashel (County Tipperary Tp), danach Clonmel und ein Stück den Fluß Suir abwärts, Carrick-On-Suir. Wir biegen nach Norden ab und kommen an den Hochkreuzen von Ahenny und Kilkieran (County Kilkenny Kk) vorbei, besuchen den Leac ns Scail Dolmen, gönnen uns einen Blick auf die Berge bei Tullaghought und kommen zu den Hochkreuzen von Kilree, diesmal sogar mit Rundturm. Unmittelbar daneben stehen die Überreste von Kells Priory. In Kilkenny besuchen wir das Schloss und unser erstes Pub. Wir biegen nach Südosten ab, wo wir bei Thomastown den Kilfane Garten besuchen, die Blackstair Mountains bewundern und den Kirchen von Ullard und St. Mullin (County Carlow Cr) einen Besuch abstatten. Die Fahrt geht weiter nach Norden zum Browne's Hill Dolmen und von hier quer durch Co. Wicklow zur Ostküste nach Courtown Harbour (County Wexford Wx). Die Küste entlang nach Süden kommen wir nach Wexford Stadt, in deren Nähe Johnstown Castle liegt. Weiter die Küste entlang bis fast nach Carnsore Point, und dann nach Westen zur Tacumshane Windmühle. Bei Wellingtonbridge machen wir eine kurze Rast an der Bannow Bay, dann besuchen wir die Tintern Abbey und Fethard Castle. Den Ring of Hook entlang kommen wir zum Hook Head. Jetzt geht es am Waterford Harbour entlang nach Duncannon und Ballyhack. Die Dunbrody Abbey und der Kilmokea Garten bei Campile liegen am Weg zum J.F.K. Memorial Forrest Park. Wir nehmen die erste Brücke über den River Barrow in New Ross und die erste Brücke über den River Suir im Waterford Stadt (County Waterford Wf), um nach Dunmore East zu gelangen. Der Küste entlang kommen wir zu den Gaulstown Dolmen, Ballynacourty und Dungarvan bevor wir die Rundreise in Ardmore beschließen.

Our first station is the Rock of Cashel (County Tipperary Tp), afterwards Clonmel and a short distance down the river Suir Carrick-On-Suir. We turn to the north and pass the high crosses of Ahenny and Kilkieran (County Kilkenny Kk), visit the Leac ns Scail dolmen, enjoy the view upon the mountains near Tullaghought and come to the high crosses of Kilree plus round tower. Close to it are the remains of Kells priory. In Kilkenny we visit the castle and our first pub. We turn to the south-east, where we visit Kilfane Gardens near Thomastown, admire the Blackstair mountains and visit the churches of Ullard and St. Mullin (County Carlow Cr). The drive continues to the north to the Browneshill dolmen and from here cross-country through Co. Wexford to the east coast and Courtown Harbour (County Wexford Wx). Along the coast towards the south we come to Wexford town and the close by Johnstown Castle. Further along the coast until Carnsore Point and then to the west to the Tacumshane wind mill. At Wellingtonbridge we have a break at the Bannow Bay, then we visit Tintern Abbey and Fethard Castle. Along the Ring of Hook we come to the Hook Head. We travel along Waterford Harbour to Duncannon and Ballyhack. Dunbrody Abbey and Kilmokea Gardens near Campile lie at our way to the J.F.K. Memorial Forrest Park. We take the first bridge across the river Barrow in New Ross and the first bridge across the river Suir in Waterford town (County Waterford Wf), in order to reach Dunmore East. Along the coast we come to the Gaulstown dolmen, Ballynacourty and Dungarvan before we end our round trip in Ardmore.
