Westtor / West Gate

Um 1300 wurde Clonmel mit einer Stadtmauer umgeben, um die Stadt bei Angriffen zu schützen. Sie diente aber auch als gesellschaftliche Trennung - Katholiken war es nicht erlaubt, innerhalb der Mauern zu wohnen. 1650 wurde Clonmel von den Truppen Cromwells erobert, danach wurde die Stadtmauer im Laufe der Jahre abgetragen als die Stadt wuchs. Das Westtor der Stadtmauer überstand bis 1831. Dann war es schon so baufällig geworden, dass es durch das noch heute vorhandene Bauwerk ersetzt wurde.

Around 1300 Clonmel was surrounded by a town wall to protect the town during attacks. But it also served for social segregation - Catholics were not allowed to dwell with the walls. In 1650 Clonmel was conquered by the troops of Cromwell, afterwards the town wall was removed over the course of the years whenever the town grew. The West Gate of the town wall endured until 1831. Then it had become so derelict that is was replaced by the still existing building.
