Holycross Abbey

In der Nähe von Thurles (Durlas Éile - Festung von Éile) gründete der Benediktiner Orden Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts ein Kloster, das wenige Jahre später an die Zisterzienser übertragen wurde. Diesen wurde ein Splitter des Kreuzes Christi zur Aufbewahrung übergeben, welcher das Kloster - jetzt Holycross Abbey (Mainistir na Croise Naofa, Heiligkreuzabtei) genannt - zu einem bekannten Wallfahrtsort aufsteigen ließ. Nach der Zeit Oliver Cromwells verfiel das Kloster, die Kreuzreliquie wurde nach Cork gebracht.

1969 wurde das Kloster wieder renoviert, der Küster der St. Peters Basilika im Vatikan stellte eine neue Kreuzreliquie zur Vefügung.

Near Thurles (Durlas Éile - strong fort of Éile) the Benedictine Order founded a monastery at the end of the 12th century, only a few years later it was transferred to the Cistercians. They were tasked with the safekeeping of a splinter of the Cross of Christ, which made the monastery - now called Holycross Abbey (Mainistir na Croise Naofa) - a famous place of pilgrimage. After the times of Oliver Cromwell, the monastery fall to ruins, the relict was brought to Cork.

In 1969 the monastery was renovated, the sacristan of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican provided a new relic of the Holy Cross.
