Kirche zum Hl. Cronán (Ruinen) / St. Cronán Church (Ruins)

(2023-07-20)

St. Cronán founded a monastery in Roscrea in the late 6th century that became the root of the town. From the 8th to the 12th century many manuscripts were produced in the monastery, the most important of them is the Book of Dimma (written by the monk Dimma MacNathi). It is the oldest known still existing manuscript in Ireland and is kept today in Trinity College in Dublin. The cathedral was also built in the 12th century. In the 1160s the Diocese of Roscrea was integrated into the Diocese of Killaloe and the cathedral was "degraded" to a parish church. The church was kept in good state and was used for masses, until in 1812 a new church was built next to it. In the process the Romanesque church was for the most parts demolished so that only the wall with the portal still exists.
