Grand Canal

Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts beginnt der Bau eines Kanals, der Dublin mit mehreren Flüssen im Süden und in der Mitte Irlands verbinden sollte. Der Hauptzweig geht von Dublin zum Shannon; der Barrow-Zweig zweigt bei Robertstown ab und führt zum Fluss Barrow in Athy; bei Monasterevin verzweigt sich dieser Ast noch einmal zum Mountmellick-Zweig; der Naas-Zweig führt nach Corbally; ein weiterer Zweig geht nach Kilbeggan.

Doch mit dem Aufkommen der Eisenbahn reduziert sich der Bedarf für den Kanal, und trotz eifriger Bauarbeiten an den verschiedenen Seitenzweigen wird um 1850 der Verkehr auf den Kanal eingestellt.

Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde der Kanal teilweise restauriert und sogar wieder schiffbar gemacht. Die Bedeutung des Kanals liegt jedoch heute in der Tourismusbranche, und auch der Weg neben dem Kanal ("Grand Canal Way") ist ein beliebter Weitwanderweg Irlands.

In the middle of the 18^th century the construction for a canal began to connect Dublin with several rivers in the south and the middle of Ireland. The main branch leads from Dublin to the Shannon; the Barrow Line forks off near Robertstown and leads to the Barrow River in Athy; at Monasterevin this line forks again to the Mountmellick Line; the Naas Line leads to Corbally; another line to Kilbeggan.

But with the rise of the railway the need for the canal diminished, and despite intense construction works on the different lines the traffic on it is closed down around 1850.

At the end of the 20^th century the canal has been partially restored and even made navigable again. The signification of the canal today however is for the tourist branch, and also the way beside the canal ("Grand Canal Way") is a popular long distance walk of Ireland.
