Leuchttuerme und Leuchtfeuer / Light Towers and Beacons

Schon in der Antike wurden Leuchttürme verwendet, um Seefahrern den Weg zu weisen oder sie vor Gefahren zu warnen. Der Leuchtturm auf der Insel Pharos vor Alexandria (~290 v. Chr. - 1303 n. Chr.) ist der erste historisch überlieferte Leutturm. Der älteste noch in Betrieb befindliche Leuchtturm ist der Herkulesturm in A Coruña (Spanien) von 110 n. Chr. Den zweitältesten Leuchtturm, den wir finden können, ist der am Hook Head (12. Jahrhundert, Leuchtfeuer schon im 5. JH). Der drittälteste dürfte der Leuchtturm von Genua sein (1543, Vorgänger vom 12. JH).

Etliche Leuchttürme wurden auf schwer zugänglichen Inseln weit draußen im Meer errichtet. Aber die meisten stehen auf der Hauptinsel und sind nicht nur für uns ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel.

Already in the Ancient world light towers were used for the guidance of seafarers or to warn them of dangers. The light tower on the isle of Pharos of Alexandria (~290 B.C. - A.D. 1303) is the first historically recorded light tower. The oldest still operating light tower is the Hercules Tower in A Coruña (Spain) from A.D. 110. The second oldest light tower we can find is the one on Hook Head (12^th century, light fires since 5^th century). The third oldest light tower could be the light tower of Genoa (1543, predecessor from 12^th century).

Several light towers were built on isles far out in the sea that are difficult to access. But the most of them stand on the main island and are not just for us a favoured place of excursions.
