Nationalparks und Naturschutzgebiete / National Parks and Nature Protection Areas

Zum Schutz der oft einzigartigen Flora und Fauna wurden in Irland verschiedene Arten von Schutzgebieten eingerichtet. Die größten Gebiete sind die Nationalparks, von denen es aktuell sieben gibt: The Burren (1991), in der Connemara (1980), in Glenveagh (1984), Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara (2024), bei Killarney (1932), in den Wicklow Bergen (1991) und um die Nephin Berge (1998). Dazu kommen Dutzende Naturreservate und eine riesige Anzahl an Natural Heritage Areas, Special Areas of Conservation, Special Protection Areas, Wildfowl Sanctuaries und Marine Protection Areas. Irland folgt dabei den Vorgaben der UNO, verschiedenen EU Richtlinien und ist dem OSPAR Abkommen zum Schutz der Nordsee und des Nordostatlantiks beigetreten.

In Nordirland gibt es keine Nationalparks, aber einige "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)".

To protect the often unique flora and fauna different kids of protection areas were created in Ireland. The largest areas are the National Parks of which currently there are seven: The Burren (1991), in the Connemara (1980), in Glenveagh (1984), Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara (2024), at Killarney (1932), in the Wicklow Mountains (1991) and around the Nephin Mountains (1998). In addition there are dozens of Nature Reserves and a large number of Natural Heritage Areas, Special Areas of Conservation, Special Protection Areas, Wildfowl Sanctuaries and Marine Protection Areas. Ireland follows the requirements of the UNO, various EU guidelines and joined the OSPAR convention for the protection of the North Sea and the North Atlantic Coast.

In Northern Ireland there are no national parks, but several "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)".
