Kirche zum Hl. Peter und Paul / St. Peter and Paul's Church

1210 hatte das Kluniazenser Priorat St. Peter und Paul Land zur Verfügung gestellt, auf dem Athlone Castle gebaut wurde. 1929 stellte das Militär Land neben der Burg zur Verfügung, auf dem die Kirche zum Hl. Peter und Paul gebaut wurde. Der Grundstein wurde 1932 gelegt, fünf Jahre später wurde die Kirche eingeweiht. Die Kirche wurde von Ralph Byrne entworfen, der sich die Basilika Sankt Paul vor den Mauern in Rom als Vorbild genommen hatte. Der Bau wurde von Dekan John Crowe geleitet, der mit einem Gewinnspiel einen Teil der Baukosten aufbrachte. Mit der Eröffnung von St. Peter und Paul wurde die alte katholische Kirche in ein Gemeindezentrum umgewandelt und ist heute das Dean Crowe Theater.
Die Kirche wirkt unpompös, besonders im Vergleich zu anderen Kirchen, die wir in Irland gesehen haben. Einen Kontrast zu den weißen Wänden bilden die farbenfrohen Glasfenster aus dem Harry Clarke Studio. Das Fenster im Foto zeigt den Hl. Patrick und einige seiner Werke.
In 1210 the Cluniac priory of St. Peter and Paul had provided the land upon which Athlone Castle was built. In 1929 the military provided land beside the castle on which the St. Peter and Paul's Church was built. The foundation stone was laid in 1932, five years later the church was dedicated. The church was designed by Ralph Byrne, who modelled it after the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome. The construction was managed by Dean John Crowe, who raised a part of the building costs with a sweepstake. With the opening of St. Peter and Paul the old Catholic church was turned into a parish hall and today is the Dean Crowe Theatre.
The church seems unpretentious, especially when compared with other churches we have seen in Ireland. A contrast to the white walls are the colourful stained glass windows from the Harry Clarke Studio. The window in the picture shows St. Patrick and some of his works.
