John Francis McCormack (1884 - 1945) wurde in Athlone geboren. Er sang im Kirchenchor von Athlone und später in Dublin, wo er 1903 den ersten Platz beim Feis Ceoil (Musikfestival) gewann. 1905 ging er nach Mailand, wo er die Ausbildung seiner Stimme vollendete. 1906 sang er erstmals in der Oper von Savona. 1909 begann seine Karriere als Tenor in Amerika. Daneben unternahm er Konzerttouren, die er auch fortführte nachdem er 1923 seine Opernkarriere beendet hatte. Er trat im Radio auf, wirkte in zwei Filmen mit und veröffentlichte hunderte Schallplatten. 1943 zog er sich aus gesundheitlichen Gründen zurück. Nach schwerer Krankheit starb er 1945 in seinem Haus in Booterstown bei Dublin. McCormack wurde schon zu Lebzeiten mit Ehrungen ausgezeichnet, auch wegen seiner wohltätigen Arbeiten.

2014 wurde ihm zu Ehren eine von Rory Breslin geschaffene Statue der Sängers im Beisein seines Enkels John McCormack enthüllt.

John Francis McCormack (1884 - 1945) was born in Athlone. He sang in the church choir of Athlone and later in Dublin where he won the first prize of the Feis Ceoil (festival of music). In 1905 he went to Milano where he completed his voice training. In 1906 he sang for the first time in the opera in Savona. In 1909 he started his career as tenor in America. Alongside he did concert tours that he still continued after ending his opera career in 1923. He appeared on radio, acted in two movies and published hundred of records. In 1943 he retired due to health reasons. After a sever illness he died in 1945 in his house in Booterstown near Dublin. McCormack was decorated with honours during his live time, also for his charity works.

In his honour a statue of the singer created by Rory Breslin was unveiled in 2014 in presence of his grand-son John McCormack.
