Nordwesttor / North West Gate

Nach mehreren schweren Angriffen durch die Iren, wurde Fore unter Eduard III. im 14. Jahrhundert und dann noch einmal unter Heinrich VI. im 15. Jahrhundert befestigt. Dabei wurden die Stadt und das Kloster mit einer Steinmauer umgeben, mit zwei befestigten Tore an der Hauptstraße. Von dieser Stadtmauer sind nur mehr die Ruinen der zwei Tore erhalten geblieben.

Vom Nordwesttor ist nur mehr der Erdgeschoß vorhanden. Ein Mörderloch in der Decke legt aber nahe, dass es einmal auch einen zweiten Stock gab.

After several devastating attacks by the Irish, Fore was fortified under Edward III. in the 14th century and again under Henry VI. in the 15th century. In the process the town and the monastery were surrounded with a stone wall, with two fortified gates along the main road. The ruins of the two gates are all that remains of these town walls.

Of the north-west gate only the ground floor still exists. A murder hole in the ceiling however implies that there once was also a second floor.
