Heilige Quelle / Holy Well

Die heilige Quelle Tobernacogany (Tobar na gCoganach, Quelle der Küche) war im 19. Jahrhundert ein Wallfahrtsort, zu dem am 20. Jänner (Hl. Féichín), 24. Juni (Hl. Johannes) und 29. 6. (Hl. Peter) Pilger kamen, um die vorgeschriebenen Rituale abzuhalten (sogenannte "Patterns"). Das Wasser der Quelle sollte gegen Kopf- und Zahnschmerzen helfen. Über der Quelle wuchs eine alte Esche. Leider schlugen die Pilger Münzen in diese Esche und das Metall tötete den Baum ab.

Bei unserem Besuch ist die Quelle trocken und es schaut so aus, als ob sie das schon lange wäre. Ein junger Baum hat den Platz der Esche übernommen und wird ebenso als Lappenbaum verwendet.

Es ist aber kein Wunder, dass das Wasser nicht siedet, wenn das Feuer nicht brennt...

The holy well Tobernacogany (Tobar na gCoganach, well of the kitchen) was a place of pilgrimage during the 19^th century, to which pilgrims came on January, 20^th (St. Féichín), June, 24^th (St. John) and June, 29^th (St. Peter) to perform specific rituals (so called "patterns"). The water in the well is said to have helped against head- and toothache. Above the well an old ash tree grew. Alas, the pilgrims drove coins into this ash and the metal killed the tree.

At our visit the well is dry and looks as if it has been so for quite a long time. A young tree took over the place of the old ash and is also used as ragtree.
