Torhaus / Gatehouse

Obwohl das Kloster von Moorland umgeben ist, war es wegen der häufigen Angriffe notwendig zusätzlich eine Mauer um das Areal zu errichten. Von dieser Mauer sind noch Teile und das Torhaus erhalten geblieben. Ursprünglich im 13. Jahrhundert errichtet, wurde es nach den Angriffen irischer Clans im 15. Jahrhundert vergrößert. Es gab Kamine und "Garderoben" (sprich: Toiletten) im Turm, möglicherweise wohnten die Wachen sogar im Haus. Mit der Schließung des Klosters in der Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts wurde auch das Torhaus nicht mehr benötigt und begann zu verfallen. 1815 war es bereits verfallen, aber um 1850 wurde es wieder bewohnbar gemacht und der steinerne Vorbau angefügt. Wer darinnen wohne, finden wir nicht heraus.
Although the monastery is surrounded by bogland, the many attacks made it necessary to construct an additional wall around the compound. Some parts and the gatehouse remain from this wall. Originally built in the 13th century, it was enlarged in the 15th century after attacks by Irish clans. There were fireplaces and "garderobes" (meaning: toilets) in the tower, maybe the guards even lived in the house. With the dissolution of the monastery in the middle of the 16th century the gatehouse was no longer needed and started to decay. In 1815 it was already decayed, however around 1850 is was again made inhabitable and the stone porch was added. Who lived in it, we cannot find out.
