Wunder 7: Steinerner Türsturz, gehoben von St. Féichíns Gebeten (Stone lintel raised by St. Féichín's prayers)
St. Féichín (also Féchin) lived in the 7th century and died in 665. There are two biographies of the saint, but they were written centuries after his death and do not always agree on the details.
The founding of the monastery in Fore is counted as his most important work. The monastery quickly grew in importance, up to 300 monks are reported to have lived and taught here. That it was also rich is attested by the reports that the monastery was plundered and burnt for at least twelve times from 771 to 1169. The last raid and the arrival of the Anglo-Normans in 1176 seem to have ushered in the end of the monastery. As the buildings of that time were likely made from wood or loam, nothing of them remains. Only a stone house, built in the 10th century and expanded in the 12th century, is still existent and is know as St. Féichíns church. It was used as parish church from around 1300 until the middle of the 16th century.
The large stone lintel above the entrance door is remarkable. A legend tells that it was too heavy for the builders. Thence St. Féichín said a prayer and could easily lift the stone into its position. That the saint had already been dead for a long time when the church was built, just has to be neglected for once.
