Fore

Suedosttor / South East Gate

(2025-07-22)

After several devastating attacks by the Irish, Fore was fortified under Edward III. in the 14th century and again under Henry VI. in the 15th century. In the process the town and the monastery were surrounded with a stone wall, with two fortified gates along the main road. The ruins of the two gates is all the remains of these town walls.

Of the south-east gate only the ground floor still exists. The rest of a staircase implies that there once was also a second floor. For the construction of the gate also stones from the (already dissolved) Benedictine priory were used.
