Markthaus / Market House

Das Gebäude am Rande des zentralen Platzes wurde ca. 1815 als Markthalle und Gerichtsgebäude errichtet. 1921 brannte die IRA die Markthalle ab, die zu diesem Zeit das temporäre Hauptquartier des Royal Irish Constabulary war (nachdem die IRA das richtige Hauptquartier ebenfalls abgebrannt hatte). 1926 wurde das Gebäude wieder aufgebaut und wurde danach als Rathaus (daher die Aufschrift) und zeitweilig als Feuerwache und als Bibliothek verwendet.
Bei unserem Besuch 2025 schaut das Gebäude unbenutzt und schon in die Jahre gekommen aus. Im Netz lesen wir später, dass es seit 2018 Pläne zur Renovierung als kommunale und touristische Einrichtung gibt. Die Renovierung soll Anfang 2028 abgeschlossen sein.
The building on the edge of the central square was built ca. 1815 as market hall and courthouse. In 1921 the IRA burnt down the market hall, because it was at that time the temporary head quarters of the Royal Irish Constabulary (after the IRA had also burnt down their regular head quarters). In 1926 the building was reconstructed and was then used as town hall (therefore the inscription) and for some time as fire station and library.
During our visit the building looks unused and run down. We read in the 'net that there have been plans for renovation as a community and tourist facility since 2018. The renovation is scheduled to be completed by early 2028.
