Gerichtsgebaeude und Ormonde Burg / Court House and Ormonde Castle

Direkt neben dem Gerichtsgebäude (1844 erbaut) stehen die Überreste von Ormonde Castle - mehr als eine Mauer und ein Turm ist nicht mehr zu sehen. Es wurde vom Normannen Theobald Walters Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts errichtet. Walters wurde der erste Chief Butler of Ireland, seine Nachfahren trugen den Titel Earls of Ormonde. Die Burg war das militärische und Verwaltungszentrum der Grafen.
Die O'Tooles und O'Byrnes aus den nahegelegenen Wicklow Bergen kamen öfters zu "Besuch", konnten die Burg aber nie erobern. Das gelang erst den Truppen von Oliver Cromwell im 17. Jahrhundert, danach blieb nur mehr eine Ruine.
Directly beside the court house (built 1844) stand the remains of Ormonde Castle - nothing more than a wall and a tower can be seen. It was constructed by the Norman Theobald Walters at the end of the 12th century. Walters became the first Chief Butler of Ireland, his ancestor bore the title of Earls of Ormonde. The castle was the military and administrative centre of the earls.
The O'Tooles and O'Byrnes from the near-by Wicklow Mountains payed frequent "visits", but never managed to conquer the castle. That was done by the troops of Oliver Cromwell, afterwards only ruins were left.
