Wexford Hafen / Wexford Harbour

Schon die Wikinger schätzten den natürlichen Hafen von Wexford und ließen sich an seinem Ufer nieder. Ab dem 15. Jahrhundert wurde er durch den Handel mit England zu einem der wichtigsten Häfen von Irland. Durch die immer größer werdenden Schiffe der letzten Jahrzehnte, hat der Hafen aber an Bedeutung für den Handel verloren. Da er viele durch die Slaney angeschwemmte und veränderliche Sandbänke hat, können keine Schiffe mit großem Tiefgang den Hafen anlaufen. Diese müssen in Rosslare Harbour anlegen.
Already the Vikings appreciated the natural harbour of Wexford and settled down on its banks. From the 15th century onwards it became one of the most important harbours of Ireland due to the trade with England. Because of the constantly growing ships during the last decades, the harbour lost its importance for trading. As it has many changing sandbanks flushed in by the river Slaney, ships with too much depth cannot call at the harbour. They have to berth at Rosslare Harbour.
