Wexford

Westtor Kulturerbe Turm / Westgate Heritage Tower

(2019-10-04)

After the Normans had conquered Wexford, they fortified the town with a town wall. Seven gates granted access to the town, six of them were torn down in the following centuries to make place for the expansion of Wexford. Only the West Gate survived because no important road led through it.

In the house beside the gate (on the photo to the left) the Westgate Heritage Centre is housed, but the windows look as if it had been locked up. Since 2019 An Tobar, a centre for Irish language and culture, is quartered in the building.
