Selskar Abtei / Selskar Abbey

Die Selskar Abtei (nordisch Eaglais Sheilscreir, Felsen der Seehunde) wurde am Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts von den Normannen gegründet, jedoch soll an diesem Platz schon vorher eine Wikinger-Kirche gestanden haben. Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts wurde die Abtei unter Heinrich VIII aufgelöst und wurde an die anglikanische Kirche übertragen. In den 1820ern baute die Church of Ireland eine neue Kirche am Gelände der Abtei unter Einbeziehung des alten Turmes. Diese Kirche wurde später aufgegeben und ist das einzige, was von der alten Abtei noch übrig geblieben ist.
Selskar Abbey (Norse Eaglais Sheilscreir, rock of the seals) was founded by the Normans at the end of the 12th century, however it is possible that an older Viking church already stood on this place. In the middle of the 16th century the abbey was dissolved unter Henry VIII and given to the Protestant church. In the 1820s the Church of Ireland built a new church on the area of the abbey incorporating the old tower. This church was later abandoned and is the only thing left of the old abbey.
