Fethard Burg / Fethard Castle

Um 1200 erbauten die Normannen in Fethard (Fiodh Ard, hoher Wald) eine Festung, bestehend aus Motte und Bailey. Später wurde auf dem Bailey eine steinerne Burg errichtet. Im 15. Jahrhundert ließ der Bischof von Ferns die Burg zu seiner befestigten Residenz ausbauen. Im 17. Jahrhundert kam es in den Besitz der Familie Loftus, die hier wohnten, bis sie nach Loftus Hall umzogen. 1922 wurde die Burg endgültig verlassen.
Around 1200 the Normans built a fortification in Fethard (Fiodh Ard, high wood) consisting of a motte and a bailey. Later the first stone castle was built on the bailey. In the 15th century the Bishop of Ferns had the castle extended as his defended residence. In the 17th century the castle came into the ownership of the Loftus family, who lived here until they moved to Loftus Hall. In 1922 the castle was finally abandoned.
