Lady's Island ist der älteste Ort Irlands, an dem Wallfahrten für die Hl. Maria stattfinden, ein Brauch der bis in 6. Jahrhundert zurückgeht. Die Wallfahrt findet einmal im Jahr ab dem 15. August (Maria Himmelfahrt) statt. Dabei wird die Insel im Uhrzeigersinn umrundet und bei verschiedenen Stationen gebetet.
Jedoch wurde hier schon in vorchristlicher Zeit von Druidinnen die Weiße Frau angebetet und diese Tradition später auf die Hl. Maria übertragen.
Lady's Island is the oldest place of Marian pilgrimages in Ireland, a rite that dates back to the 6th century. The pilgrimage starts every year on August, 15th (Assumption Day). During it the island is circled in clockwise direction and there are several stations for praying.
However, already in pre-Christian times on this place female druids prayed to the White Woman and this tradition was later carried onwards with St. Mary.
