Rathmacnee Burg / Rathmacnee Castle
The Norman family Rossiter came to Ireland in the late 12th century and settled down in Rathmacknee (Ráth Mhic Naoi), ruling the land and building castles in the surrounding townlands. The castle of Rathmacknee was constructed in the late 15th century. During the rebellion against Oliver Cromwell, the Rossiter family lost the fight and their possessions.
The castle was restored in the 19th century by the then owner, Hamilton Morgan, and is one of the most complete tower houses of Ireland. It is still in private ownership.
