Vinegar Hill

Vinegar Hill steht am linken Ufer der Slaney, gegenüber der Stadtmitte von Enniscorthy. Hier fand am 21. Juni 1798 die entscheidende Schlacht zwischen den Irischen Rebellen und der Britischen Armee statt. Die Iren verloren die Schlacht und wurden zurückgedrängt, bis die Rebellion niedergeschlagen war.

Am Parkplatz wurde eine Gedenkstätte für die in der Schlacht gefallenen errichtet, ergänzt um den Text des Liedes "At Boolavogue", das von der Rebellion handelt. Der runde Stumpf auf der Spitze des Hügels ist der Überrest einer Windmühle aus dem 17. oder 18. Jahrhundert, in der die Rebellen ihre Kommandozentrale hatten. Danach wurde sie nicht mehr verwendet und verfiel.

Vinegar Hill stands on the left banks of the Slaney, opposite of the town centre of Enniscorthy. Here, on June, 21^th 1798 the decisive battle between the Irish Rebels and the British Army took place. The Irish lost the battle and were pushed back until the rebellion had been put down.

On the parking area a memorial for the victims of the battel was erected, completed by the text of the song ";At Boolavogue", that tells of the rebellion. The round stump on top of the hill are the remains of a windmill from the 17^th or 18^th century that the rebels made their command centre. Afterwards it was no longer used and fell into disrepair.
