Grab von Koenig Diarmuid MacMurrough / Grave of King Diarmuid MacMurrough

(2019-10-05)

Diarmuid MacMurrough was born as the son of the King of Leinster and followed his father on the throne. After conflicts with the High King Turlough O'Conor (Toirdelbach Ua Conchobair) and later with the King of Breifne, Tiernan O'Rourke (Tighearnán Ua Ruairc), Diarmuid was ousted in 1166. He seeked and found the support of the English King Henry II, and so Diarmuid and an army or Norman warriors led by the Earl of Pembroke, Richard "Strongbow" de Clare, invaded Ireland and reclaimed the throne within weeks. They did, however, not stop at the borders of Leinster. After the death of Diarmuid in 1171, the English took over the rule of the island which they did not forfeit until the 20th century.

The remains of an old high cross on the graveyard of Ferns is said to mark the spot, where Diarmuid MacMurrough is buried.
