Loftus Hall

Im späten 12. Jahrhundert erbaute der Normanne Raymond Le Gros an dieser Stelle eine Burg, die in den 1350ern durch die Redmond Hall ersetzt wurde. Alexander Redmond unterlag 1649 den Truppen von Oliver Cromwells, hatte sich aber so tapfer geschlagen, dass die Familie bis zum Tod von Alexander in dem Haus wohnen bleiben durfte. 1666 übernahm die Familie Loftus das Anwesen. John Henry Loftus ließ in den 1870ern das Haus renovieren und ausbauen, um es für den Besuch von Königin Victoria vorzubereiten (die dann aber doch nicht kam). Im 20 Jahrhundert fand das Haus Verwendung als Mädchenschule, später als Hotel. Die heutigen Besitzer, die Quigley Familie, öffneten das Haus 2012 als Touristenattraktion.

Loftus Hall lockt uns nicht nur als das "verwunschenste Haus in Irland" (das von gespenstischen Erscheinungen, Poltergeistern, ja selbst dem Teufel persönlich heimgesucht worden sein soll), sondern auch mit einem schönen Ummauerten Garten. Leider ist das Anwesen bei unserem Besuch geschlossen, es scheint eine private Veranstaltung stattzufinden.

In the late 12^th century the Norman lord Raymond Le Gros built a castle on this site, which was replaced by Redmond Hall in the 1350s. Alexander Redmond succumbed to the troops of Olvier Cromwell in 1649, but had fought so valiantly that the family was allowed to stay in the house until Alexander had died. In 1666 the Loftus family took over the estate. John Henry Loftus had the house renovated and expanded in the 1870s, expecting a visit by Queen Victoria (who did not come after all). In the 20^th century the house was used as school for girls and later as a hotel. The current owners, the Quigley family, opened the house as tourist attraction in 2012.

Loftus Hall lures us not only with the reputation as "Ireland's most haunted house" (that was visited by ghostly wraiths, poltergeists and even the devil himself), but also with a beautiful Walled Garden. Alas, at the day of our visit, the estate is closed, as a private event seems to take place.
