Rosslare Harbour

Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde der Hafen von Wexford zu seicht für die immer größer werdenden Schiffe. Verschlickung durch die Ablagerungen der Slaney war ein zusätzliches Problem. Es wurde nach einem Platz für einen neuen Hafen gesucht und die Wahl fiel auf eine Landspitze im Südwesten von Irland am Eingang zum St. Georgs-Kanal. 1906 wurde von hier aus eine Fährverbindung nach Fishguard in Wales, etwa 100 Kilometer entfernt, eingerichtet; Fährverbindungen nach Frankreich folgten. Benannt wurde der Hafen nach der Stadt Rosslare (Ros Láir, die mittlere Halbinsel), die einige Kilometer entfernt ist. Die Ortschaft Rosslare Harbour entwickelte sich um den Hafen herum.

Rosslare Harbour wurde zu einem der wichtigsten Häfen in Irland, im neuen Jahrtausend wurde er in "Rosslare Europort" umbenannt. Seine Bedeutung stieg nach dem Austritt von Großbritannien aus der Europäischen Union. Die direkten Fährverbindungen nach Frankreich dauern zwar bis zu 24 Stunden, ersparen aber einen zweimaligen Grenzübertritt im Vergleich zur davor üblichen Route quer durch England.

In the 19^th century the harbour of Wexford had become too shallow for the ever growing ships. Silting due to the sediments of the River Slaney was an additional problem. A place for a new harbour was searched and the choice fell unto a cape in the south-west of Ireland at the entrance to the St. George's Channel. In 1906 from here a ferry connection to Fishguard in Wales, about 100 kilometres away, was established. Ferry connections to France followed. The harbour was named after the town of Rosslare (Ros Láir, the middle peninsula) a few kilometres from here. The town of Rosslare Harbour developed around the port.

Rosslare Harbour became one of the most important ports of Ireland, in the new millennium it was renamed to "Rosslare Europort". It even got more important after Great Britan left the Euorean Union. Although the direct ferry transfers to France take up to 24 hours, they avoid the two border crossings needed for the route across England that was usually used before.
