Glenarm Burg und Gaerten / Glenarm Castle and Gardens

Die erste Burg in Glenarm (Gleann Arma, Tal der Armee) wurde im 13. Jahrhundert von John Bisset erbaut. Um 1500 eroberten die O'Donnells die Besitztümer der Bissets und das Anwesen ist seither im Besitz der Familie McDonnells. Sir Randal MacDonnell, 1. Graf von Antrim, ersetzte die Burg um 1600 durch ein Schloß, das aber schon 1642 von einer Schottischen Armee demoliert wurde. Die Familie wohnte zu dieser Zeit in Dunluce Castle, das Anwesen in Glenarm war ihr Jagdschloss. In der Mitte des 18. Jahrhundert renovierten die McDonnell das Schloss und verlegten ihren Hauptwohnsitz hierher.
Da die aktuellen Besitzer Randal McDonnell, 10. Graf von Antrim, und seine Frau Aurora gerade nicht da sind, führt uns Butler George durch die Räumlichkeiten.
The first castle in Glenarm (Gleann Arma, glen of the army) was built in the 13th century by John Bisset. Around 1500 the O'Donnells conquered the possessions of the Bissets and the estate has been in their ownership since then. Sir Randal MacDonnell, 1st Earl of Antrim, replaced the castle by a new one around 1600, that however was demolished by a Scotish army in 1642. The family then lived in Dunluce Castle, using the estate in Glenarm as hunting lodge. In the middle of the 18th century the McDonnells renovated the castle and moved their principal residence to Glenarm.
As the current owners, Randal McDonnell, 10th Earl of Antrim, and his wife Aurora are not at present, Butler George guides us around the premises.
