Fenagh Abtei / Fenagh Abbey

Der Hl. Caillín - ein Schüler des Hl. Colmcille - gründete im 6. Jahrhundert eine Abtei in Fenagh (Fiodhnach, bewaldeter Platz). Einer Legende nach prophezeite der Hl Caillín, dass jeder, der im rechten Glauben sei und am Friedhof der Abtei beerdigt wäre, direkt in den Himmel auffahren würde. Daher sollen hier viele irische Könige ihre letzte Ruhestätte gefunden haben.
Die Schule der Abtei wurde eine der wichtigsten in Irland und war in ganz Europa bekannt. 1516 wurde hier das Buch von Fenagh vollendet, in dem die Geschichte des Hl. Caillín und andere Erzählungen der Gegend gesammelt sind. Eine Kopie des Buches wird in der Royal Irish Academy aufbewahrt.
Die ehemalige Kirche wird 1244 als "dachlos" beschrieben, 1360 brannte sie nach einem Unfall ab. An ihrer statt wurde das Gebäude errichtet, deren Ruinen heute zu sehen sind. In der Mitte des 16. Jahrhundert wurde die Abtei durch Oliver Cromwell aufgelöst, Ende dieses Jahrhunderts wurde sie im Krieg der Zwei Könige beschädigt. Danach wurde die Kirche der Abtei von der anglikanischen Gemeinde verwendet bis die neue Kirche gebaut wurde.
Eine zweite Kirche, nur etwa hundert Meter entfernt, liegt auf Privatgrund und kann nicht besichtigt werden.
St. Caillín - a disciple of St. Colmcille - founded an abbey in Fenagh (Fiodhnach, wooded place) in the 6th century. According to a legend he prophesied that everyone in the right faith who is buried in the cemetery of the abbey will go straight to heaven. Therefore many Irish kings are said to have found here their last resting place.
The school of the abbey became one of the most important ones in Ireland and was known all over Europe. In 1516 here the Book of Fenagh was completed that collects the History of St. Caillín and more tales from the area. A copy of the book is kept at the Royal Irish Academy.
The former church was described as "roofless" in 1244, in 1360 it burnt down after an accident. In its place the building was erected whose ruins can be seen today. In the middle of the 16th century the abbey was dissolved by Oliver Cromwell, at the end of that century it was demolished during the Williamite War. Afterwards the church of the abbey was used by the Anglican community until the new church had been built.
A second church, only about hundred metres away, is on private property and cannot be visited.
