Ballast Bank

Im Hafen fällt uns ein Objekt auf, das wir nicht richtig deuten können. Im Internet finden wir die Antwort: Es ist die Ballast Bank, eine künstliche Insel, auf der Schiffe ihren Ballast (Sand oder Steine) entladen konnten, bevor sie am Hafen anlegten. Die Quellen sind sich aber nicht einige, wann sie gebaut wurde (1831 oder 1937). Verwendet wird sie schon seit langem nicht mehr.

Links am Horizont ist der schmale Streifen der Raven Spitze zu sehen.

In the harbour an object catches our eyes, that we cannot figure out. In the internet we find the answer: It is the Ballast Bank, an artificial island, on which ships could unload their ballast (sand or stones) before berthing in the harbour. The sources do not agree about the building date (1831 or 1937). Anyhow, it has not been in use since a long time.

On the left side on the horizon the small line of Raven Point can be seen.
