Der Fluss Blackwater endet 169 Kilometern von seiner Quelle entfernt bei Youghal in der Keltischen See. Aber das war angeblich nicht immer so. Der Historiker Geoffrey Keating berichtet im 17. Jahrhundert, dass der Fluss früher in der Whiting Bay mündete, aber im Jahre 830 nach einem Sturm seinen Lauf Richtung Westen verschoben hatte. Nur wenige Jahre später kamen die Wikinger, Youghal wurde zu einem der wichtigsten Häfen Irlands und der Fluss Blackwater zur Hauptverkehrsader bis nach Cappoquin. Heute ist das Gebiet um die Mündung ein Feuchtgebiete von internationaler Bedeutung nach der Ramsar-Konvention und ein Europäisches Vogelschutzgebiet.

The River Blackwater ends after 169 kilometres away from its source near Youghal in the Celtic Sea. However that was not always the case. The historian Geoffrey Keating reports in the 17^th century that the river once ended in Whiting Bay but after a storm in AD 830 it changed its bed towards the west. A few years later the Vikings arrived, Youghal became one of the most important ports of Ireland and the River Blackwater the main traffic route up to Cappoquin. Today the area around the mouth is on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance and a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the EU Birds Directive.
