Leuchtturm / Lighthouse

Um 1200 ließ Maurice Fitzgerald den ersten Leuchtturm in Youghal errichten. Er wurde von den Schwestern des St. Anna Konvent betreut. Als der Konvent 1542 aufgelöst wurde, verfiel der Leuchtturm. Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts forderten Kaufleute die Errichtung eines neuen Leuchtturms, nachdem mehr als 30 Schiffe vor der Küste von Youghal Schiffbruch erlitten hatten. Die Diskussionen, wo der neue Leuchtturm stehen sollte, dauerte über zehn Jahre, in denen schon mit dem Bau auf der vorgelagerten Insel Capel Island begonnen wurden. Doch dann fiel die Entscheidung zugunsten des alten Standorts und der neue Leuchtturm wurde 1852 in Betrieb genommen.

Der halbfertige Leuchtturm auf Capel Island ist mit einem guten Zoom sogar vom Festland aus sichtbar.

Around 1200 Maurice Fitzgerald had created the first lighthouse in Youghal. It was maintained by the sisters of St. Anne's Convent. When the convent was dissolved in 1542 the lighthouse fell to ruins. At the beginning of the 19^th century merchants required the building of a new lighthouse after more than 30 ships had wrecked off the coast of Youghal. The discussion about the location of the new lighthouse lasted more than ten years. In that time the construction of a lighthouse on the close-by Capel Island had already started. But then the decision was made in favour of the old site and the new lighthouse started its operation in 1852.
