Strangford Lough

Strangford Lough (Loch Cuan, See der Häfen) ist eigentlich ein Meeresarm, der nur durch einen schmalen Kanal bei der Stadt Strangford mit dem Meer verbunden ist. Er entstand am Ende der letzten Eiszeit. Wegen dem milden Klima und dem reichen Nahrungsangebot ist die Gegend schon seit der Mittelsteinzeit (7000 v. Chr.) besiedelt. Etwa 1/3 des ca. 150 km² großen Sees sind bei Ebbe trocken. Der See und seine Ufer stehen unter Landschafts- und Naturschutz (Fauna-Flora-Habitat-Gebiet).
Strangford Lough (Loch Cuan, lake of the havens) is actually an estuary that is connected to the sea with only a small channel at the town of Strangford. It was created at the end of the last Ice Age. Due to the milde climate and the rich supply of food the area has been populated since the middle Stone Age (7000 B.C.). About 1/3rd of the roughly 150 km² large lake are dry land at low tide. The lake and its shores has been designated a Special Area of Conservation.
