Einer der Höhepunkte bei der Gartenreise 2022 ist der Besuch von Mount Stewart, der als einer der zehn schönsten Gärten der Welt beworben wird. Aber wie immer bei Busreisen ist die Besuchszeit viel zu kurz geplant, wir müssen uns zwischen Hausführung und ausgedehntem Gartenbesuch entscheiden und wählen den Garten.
Alexander Stewart (1699 - 1781) und seine Frau Mary zogen während der "Bepflanzung von Ulster" von Schottland nach Irland, wo sie 1744 ein riesiges Gebiet erwarben. Ein Teil dieses Besitzes wurde das Anwesen von Mount Stewart. Ihr Sohn Robert (1739 - 1821) wurde zum 1. Marquis von Londonderry ernannt. Mount Stewart war nur einer der Wohnsitze der Stewarts, die Entwicklung des Anwesens dauerte daher seine Zeit.
Erst Lady Edith, die 7. Marquise von Londonderry war die treibende Kraft hinter der Neugestaltung von Garten und Haus zu ihrem heutigen Zustand. Ihre Tochter Mairi übergab das Anwesen 1977 an den National Trust, behielt aber noch das Wohnrecht bis zu ihrem Tod 2009. Bis 2015 ließ der National Trust das Haus restaurieren und öffnete Mount Stewart für die Öffentlichkeit.
One of the highlights of our garden journey in 2022 is the visit at Mount Stewart that is advertised as one of the ten most beautiful gardens in the world. Alas as it is with bus tours, the time for visiting is planned much to short and we have to decide between a guided tour through the house or the extended visit of the gardens. We decide for the gardens.
Alexander Stewart (1699 - 1781) and his wife Mary moved from Scotland to Ireland during the "Plantation of Ulster". They acquired a large area of land in 1744 of which a part became the estate of Mount Stewart. Their son Robert (1739 - 1821) became the 1st Marquess of Londonderry. Mount Stewart was just one of the domiciles of the Stewarts, the development of the property took its time.
It was Lady Edith, the 7th Marchioness of Londonderry who was the driving force behind the reconstruction of the gardens and the house to its present-day appearance. Her daugther Mairi handed over the estate to the National Trust in 1977, but kept the right of abode until her death in 2009. Until 2015 the National Trust restored the house and opened Mount Stewart to the public.
