Die beiden britischen Piloten John Alcock und Arthur Brown schafften den ersten non-stop Transatlantikflug mit einem Flugzeug. Sie starteten am 14. Juni 1919 in Neufundland und landeten am Tag danach südlich von Clifden. Für diese Leistung wurden sie von George V. in den Ritterstand erhoben (Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire). Eine Statue der beiden Piloten wurde zum 100. Jubiläum des Ereignisses vom Londoner Heathrow Flughafen nach Clifden gebracht und am Marktplatz aufgestellt.

The two British aviators John Alcock and Arthur Brown succeeded with the first non-stop transatlantic flight with an aeroplane. They took off in Newfundland on the 14. June 1919 and landed south of Clifden on the day after. For this achievement they where knighted by George V (Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire). For the 100th anniversary of the event a statue of the two pilots was brought from London Heathrow Airport to Clifden Market Square.
