Castlebar
Die Stadt Castlebar (Caisleán an Bharraigh) entstand um das Anglo-Normannische De Barrie Castle aus dem 12. Jahrhundert. Die Geschichte der Stadt wurde maßgeblich von der Familie Bingham (den späteren Earls of Lucan) bestimmt, die vom Beginn des 17. Jahrhundert an für 400 Jahre herrschten. Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts wurde Castlebar von den Engländern als Außenposten benutzt und die Stadt war eine Garnisonsstadt. Nach dem Aufstand im Jahre 1798 wurde hier die sehr kurzlebige Republik Connaught ausgerufen. 1879 wurde in Castlebar die Irish National Land League (Conradh na Talún) gegründet, deren Ziel es war Großgrundbesitz zugunsten verarmter Bauern abzuschaffen.
Heute ist Castlebar die Hauptstadt und das administrative Zentrum der Grafschaft Mayo. Aber es ist bei weitem nicht der einzige Ort in Irland, an dem wir sein möchten.
The town of Castlebar (Caisleán an Bharraigh) originated around the Anglo-Norman De Barrie Castle from the 12th century. The history of the town was decisively decided by the family Bingham (the later Earls of Lucan), which reigned starting from the beginning of the 17th century for 400 years. At the end of the 17th century Castlebar was an important outpost of the British rulers and was made into a garrison town. After the up-risings in the year 1798 here the very short-lived Republic Connaught was proclaimed. In 1879 the Irish National Land League (Conradh na Talún) was founded in Castlebar, with the aim to abolish landlordism in favour of impoverished tenant farmers.
Nowadays Castlebar is the county town and the administrative centre of the County Mayo. Still, it is by far not the only place in Ireland we are longing for to go.
