Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts wurden in Belfast, Cork und Galway drei Hochschulen mit den Namen "Queen's College" gegründet. Sie gaben auch katholischen und anderen nicht-anglikanischen Studenten die Möglichkeit zur akademischen Ausbildung. (Am Trinity College in Dublin gab es formal zwar keine Beschränkungen auf Grund der Religion, es war trotzdem fest in anglikanischer Hand.) Allerdings wurde an den Queen's Colleges keine Theologie gelehrt, was zur Ablehung durch Papst Pius IX und in Folge zur Gründung von Katholischen Universitäten führte.
Schon 1882 wurden die Queen's Colleges durch die Royal University of Ireland ersetzt. Durch den Irish Universities Act 1908 wurde das Queen's College in Belfast von den beiden anderen getrennt und in Queen's University Belfast umbenannt. Der Lehrbetrieb wurde nach und nach auf mehrere Standorte in Belfast ausgedehnt.
Die Statue vor dem Hauptgebäude (das nach seinem Architekten Charles Lanyon "Lanyon Gebäude" genannt wird) erinnert an die gefallenen Soldaten der beiden Weltkriege.
In the middle of the 19th century three universities named "Queen's College" were founded in Belfast, Cork and Galway. They provided the possibility of academic education also to Catholic and other non-Anglican students. (Although at the Trinity College in Dublin there were formally no restrictions based on religion, it still was dominated by Anglicans.) However, theology was no taught at these colleges, which led to their rejection by Pope Pius IX followed by the founding of Catholic universities.
In 1882 the Queen's Colleges were replaced by the Royal University of Ireland. With the Irish Universities Act 1908 the Queen's College Belfast was disassociated from the other two colleges and renamed to Queen's University Belfast. By and by, the teaching was extended to other locations in Belfast.
The statue in front of the main building (named "Lanyon Building" after its architect, Charles Lanyon) commemorates the fallen soldiers of both World Wars.
