William Thomson (1824 - 1907) wurde als Sohn von James Thomson, Mathematik- und Techniklehrer an der Queen's Universitat, in Belfast geboren. James Thomson wechselte 1832 an die Universität Glasgow, wo William 1834 zu studieren begann. Nach mehreren Jahren an anderen Universitäten, kam William zurück nach Glasgow, wo er von 1846 bis 1899 Professor für theoretische Physik war. Seine Hauptwerke verfasste er zur Elektrizitätslehre und zur Thermodynamik, die ihm internationales Ansehen einbrachten. William entwickelte auch die von Anders Celsius (1701 - 1744) eingeführte Temperaturskala weiter und berechnete den absoluten Nullpunkt der Temperatur (-273,15 °C) schon fast genau. 1892 wurde er für seine Leistungen als Baron Kelvin in den Adelsstand erhoben. Im zu Ehren wurde die Grundeinheiten der Temperatur des internationalen Einheitensystems "Kelvin" benannt.
William Thomson (1824 - 1907) was born in Belfast, as son of James Thomson, a teacher of mathematics and engineering at the Queen's University. James Thomson relocated to the University of Glasgow in 1832, William started to study there in 1834. After several years at other universities, William returned to Glasgow working as professor for theoretical physics from 1846 to 1899. He wrote his main works about electricity and thermodynamics which established his international reputation. William advanced the temperature scale introduced by Anders Celsius (1701 - 1744) and calculated the absolute zero point of temperature (-273.15 °C) almost exactly. In 1892 he was knighted for his accomplishments as Baron Kelvin. In his honour the primary unit of tempearture in the International System of Units was named "Kelvin".
