Die RMS (Royal Mail Ship) Titanic und ihre Schwesternschiffe Olympic und Britannic wurden Anfang des 20. Jahrhundert in der Werft von Harland and Wolff in Belfast entwickelt und gebaut. Sie sollten größer und luxuriöser sein, als alle bisherigen Passagierschiffe. Das Schicksal der Titanic ist nicht zuletzt durch den Film von James Cameron bekannt: Bei ihrer ersten Fahrt über den Atlantik rammte sie in der Nacht vom 14. auf den 15. April 1912 einen Eisberg und versank in weniger als drei Stunden im Meer. 2/3 der Menschen an Bord starben. Das erste Schiff, das zur Hilfe kam, die RMS Carpathia, konnte nur mehr die Überlebenden an Bord nehmen.
2012 wurde an der Stelle, wo einst die Schiffe gebaut wurden, das Museum "Titanic Belfast" eröffnet. Bei unserem Besuch 2022 bekommen wir zwei Bordkarten und werden eingeschifft. Eine Zeitlinie leitet uns durch die Räume und Stockwerke. Bilder und Videos versetzen uns in die damalige Zeit zurück, der Audioguide gibt noch zusätzliche Erklärungen zu den Beschriftungen ab. Wir erfahren nicht nur über die Technik mit der die Titanic gebaut wurde, sondern auch über das soziale Umfeld. Über zwei interessante und lehrreiche Stunde später erreichen wir den Zielhafen ohne in der Flut an Informationen unterzugehen.
The RMS (Royal Mail Ship) Titanic and her sisterships Olympic and Britannic were constructed and built at the beginning of the 20th century in the docks of Harland and Wolff in Belfast. They were designed to be bigger and more luxurious than all previous passenger ships. The fate of the Titanic is well know, not least due to the movie by James Cameron: On her first travel across the Atlantic Ocean she collided with an iceberg in the night from April, 14th to 15th 1912 and sunk in less than three hours into the sea. 2/3rds of the people on board died. The first ship that arrived to help, the RMS Carpathia, could do not more than take aboard the survivors.
At the location where once the ships were built, the museum "Titanic Belfast" was opened in 2012. When we visit in 2022 we are given two boarding tickets and then embark. A time line guides us through the rooms and floors, pictures and videos displace us to a time gone by, the audio guide supplies additional information to the textual descriptions. We learn not only about the technical aspects with which the Titanic was built, but also about the social environment. Over two interesting and instructive hours later we reach the final station without drowing in the flood of information.
