Desmond Burg / Desmond Castle

Im frühen 12. Jahrhundert wurde das Königreich Muster in die Königreiche Desmond (Deasmhumhain, Südmunster) und Thomond (Tuadh-Mhumhain, Nordmunster) geteilt. Bei der Anglo-Normannischen Eroberung von Irland im späten 12. Jahrhundert fiel ein großer Teil von Desmond unter die Herrschaft der Familie FitzGerald, die die Titel Barone von Desmond und später Grafen von Desmond trugen. Als die FitzGeralds um 1500 von König Heinrich VII das Recht auf die Einnahme von Zoll im Hafen bekamen, baute Maurice FitzGerald, 9. Graf von Desmond, diese Burg als Zollamt. Während des Kampfes von Kinsale (1601) benutzte sie die spanische Armee als Lagerhaus, später wurde sie als Gefängnis verwendet. 1938 wurde die Burg restauriert und in die Liste der Nationalen Dekmäler (#360) aufgenommen. Seit 1997 ist das Internationale Weinmuseum untergebracht.
In the early 12th century the Kingdom of Munster was split into the Kingdomes of Desmond (Deasmhumhain, South Munster) and Thomond (Tuadh-Mhumhain, North Munster). When the Anglo-Norman conquered Ireland in the late 12th century a large part of Desmond fell under the sovereignty of the family FitzGerald, who bore the titles of Barons of Desmond and later Earls of Desmond. About 1500 the FitzGeralds were granted the right to levy customs in the harbour and Maurice FitzGerald, 9th Earl of Desmond, built this castle as custom house. During the Battle of Kinsale (1601) the Spanish army used it as magazine, later it became a prison. In 1938 the castle was restored and added to the list of National Monuments (#360). Since 1997 it houses the International Museum of Wine.
