Belvelly Castle wurde an der Furt zwischen Fota Island und Great Island erbaut und kontrollierte diesen wichtigsten Zugang. 1803 wurden die beiden Inseln mit einer Brücke verbunden, über die noch heute die einzige Straße auf Great Island und damit auch nach Cobh führt.

Belvelly Castle was built beside the ford between Fota Island and Great Island and controlled that important access. In 1803 the two islands were connected by a bridge on which to this day is the only road to Great Island and therefore also Cobh.
